Benefits of CBD

Of the 113 unique cannabinoids identified in Cannabis, there are two compounds commonly recognized and are worth learning more about.  The first well-known compound is Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), this is the primary psychoactive ingredient in Cannabis.  Then there is Cannabidiol (CBD), which is quickly gaining recognition for its medicinal benefits without the psychoactive effects.

CBD is most effective in treating inflammation, which is a common symptom for most illness and disease.  These products can be used both internally and externally, making it ideal for topical applications.  CBD products come in many forms including dried flower or bud, which can be smoked or vaporized.  There are also ingestible oils, edibles, transdermal patches, suppositories and topicals products available.

There is also evidence that CBD can help to suppress and control seizures.  CBD dominant products are currently being used to treat both children and adults with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) and Dravet Syndrome.  This treatment has been so successful a specific strain has been developed for this, called Charlotte’s Web, produced by the Stanley brothers in Colorado.

CBD is also an effective treatment for general nausea due to the prolonged activation of CB-1 receptors within the brain, which reduces the sensation of nausea.  British Medical Journal study reports CBD can alleviate both nausea and vomiting as a result of chemotherapy treatments.

CBD is also a powerful anti-anxiety treatment, which can also help overall sleep quality.  For those looking to get better sleep, select strains high in CBN, which is the most sedative compound.  Some suggested strains would be Strawberry Haze, Animal Cookies and White Widow.  When used in the right ratios, CBN can induce sleep for 5 to 6 hours.  If you are vaping your product, the boiling point for CBN is said to be 185°C or 365°F for the best results.

CBG and CBDV are two other components of Cannabis.  Both can help with stomach function by decreasing the inflammation characteristic of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), making this an excellent treatment for individuals with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These two components are also effective in relieving mild or moderate pain, which is typically caused by inflammation.  Some recommended strains would be Magic Jordan, Destroyer and Mickey Kush.

CBD works best when combined with all the other components in Cannabis, commonly referred to as the entourage effect, but can be isolated if needed.  For individuals interested in using Cannabis and who want to avoid the psychoactive effects, CBD is a great option.

Currently, the legal source in Canada is through the licensed producers and requires a valid prescription for medical purposes.  Once recreational Cannabis is legal in Canada later this year, individuals will be able to purchase Cannabis products in physical storefronts or dispensaries and online, including CBD.
