Cultivating Office Culture

Office culture is defined as the character and personality of an organization. It is based on a company’s values, traditions, beliefs, interactions, behaviours and attitudes. The key factors which influence internal culture are those in leadership roles, by their management team, the policies in place and by its staff.  Having a positive workplace or culture attracts talent, helps with job satisfaction and retention of employees which directly affects performance and the overall success of the business.

What makes Spiritleaf’s office culture unique? We see both the stores and the support center as a hub for like-minded people. We surround ourselves with those who are highly skilled in their area of expertise and who are passionate about the Cannabis industry. We work internally to establish core values and to set reasonable goals in order to be successful.

Spiritleaf’s core values include our priority to the culture, to be accepted and embraced by the Cannabis community. Building on our passion for Cannabis, Spiritleaf views our collective experience as a necessary asset for success. The creativity to push boundaries, with the utmost integrity is another pillar of the business. Helping to make the Cannabis experience fun and welcoming for all is another important value shared by all staff. Finally, we see planting deep roots in the community by advocating for public and consumer safety as our highest priority.

At the Calgary office, there are several fun and unique workspaces available for staff to utilize. First, is the formal Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund ‘Legacy Space’ which is used as a conference room, this room is dedicated to the ongoing conversation of reconciliACTION.  There are some casual areas for brainstorming sessions and presentations. The Hip lounge upstairs has a homey feel and comes complete with a stylish sofa and plenty of HIP paraphernalia. We are also proud to feature a one-of-a-kind canvas transfer featuring Gord Downie, exclusive to Spiritleaf. The artwork was created by Russell Thomas Art, who is a full-time artist based in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. The staff kitchen has all the amenities needed, as well as a ‘Space Invaders’ collectable video arcade machine for extra stimulation.

Downstairs there is a smaller, more intimate meeting room, which was the original space used when Spiritleaf first began. This area is a tribute to Cannabis Culture displaying the ‘Cannabis for all’ slogan on the wall and a signed Tony Hawk skateboard for good measure.  Scattered amongst the halls are vintage copies of High Times magazine, which are enjoyed by all who visit.  There is a legacy wall that showcases many of the articles and accomplishments from over the last two years. Spiritleaf also provides an array of munchies and refreshments onsite for office staff and visitors, as a special perk. Staff are welcome to bring their dogs to work, which improves the quality of life for all and provides some laughs along the way.

When asked, the office staff described the environment and the people in it with these adjectives:

  • adaptable
  • approachable
  • autonomous
  • best in class
  • generous
  • humble
  • inclusive
  • Innovative
  • knowledgeable
  • passionate
  • relentless
  • supportive

We see the office culture at Spiritleaf as an expression of affection for the cannabis community and we look forward to what the future industry brings. Good times are here!  If you are interested in joining the Spiritleaf team you can search for specific store location opportunities on indeed.ca.
